  7. When EMM386 driver is used with DOS 4.01, it gives the following
  8. error on a soft reset:

  10.     EMM386 Exception Error # ....
  11.      Press Enter to Reboot

  13. Solution:

  15. When EMM386 drier is loaded, it switches the system to protected
  16. mode.  When a soft boot is done, DOS should first switch back to
  17. the real mode, and then give control to the BIOS for soft reset.
  18. This is done because I/O instructions cannot be executed in
  19. protected mode (most BIOS calls are I/O operations).

  21. In DOS 4.01, the operating system does not switch to real mode
  22. before giving control to the bios, this causes the EMM386 Exception
  23. error.

  25. Microsoft has acknowledged this problem, and should fix it in the
  26. next release of DOS.
